Turning hearts, heads and minds

Mills demonstrates turning prowess at MACH.

Mills CNC, the exclusive distributor of Doosan machine tools in the UK and Ireland, is taking an impressive cross-section of Doosan lathes and multi-axis turning centres to MACH.

From its Stand at the Show (Hall 5 Stand 5448), the company will be exhibiting 16 Doosan machines in total... eleven of which are lathes/turning centres, including a number making their MACH debuts.

Says Nick Frampton, Mills’ managing director:

‘Our Lynx and Puma lathes and turning centres are widely respected and highly regarded by precision component manufacturers everywhere. The new models we’re launching and exhibiting at MACH will only strengthen their reputation.’

Mills’ stand will feature 3 x Lynx lathes; 3 x Puma lathes (chuck size 8”/10”/12”); 2 x large-capacity Puma lathes,  2 x multi-axis turning centres, and 1 x ram-type vertical turning lathe.

Lynx lathes

Lynx 220 LMSA: New at MACH

The new Lynx sub-spindle lathe is aimed at manufacturers looking for a small, reliable and highly-efficient lathe capable of machining complex parts in one set up.

The Lynx 220 LMSA is a high-performance, high-specification machine equipped with 5.5-kw, 6,000-rpm sub-spindle, a 12- station turret (24-position indexing capability), and full C-axis capability on both its main and sub-spindle (360 degrees in 0.001 increments).

The new 6” chuck/ 51-mm bar diameter Lynx is equipped with driven tools (3 .7kW 6,000-rpm) and, as such, provides manufacturers with additional mill, drill and tapping capability.

The machine has a 15kW 6,000-rpm main spindle and is equipped as standard with an automatic tool setter, parts catcher, pneumatic parts ejector with coolant feed (on the sub-spindle), and parts conveyor.

Lynx 300M

The Lynx 300 series is the largest in the highly successful range of 2- and 3-axis value driven Lynx lathes.

The 300 series machine has a 10” chuck/76mm bar work diameter, and full C-axis and Live Tooling capability.

The Lynx 300M lathe is a general purpose machine that provides customers with outstanding performance at a more than competitive price.

Lynx 220B

The Lynx 220B is one of Mills’ (and Doosan’s) best-selling small lathes. The 8” chuck/51mm bar diameter machine is a real work-horse and has a 15kW 5,000rpm spindle, 12-station turret and can accommodate work pieces up to 300mm in length.

Comments Andrew Jack, Mills’ technical director:

‘Lynx lathes are popular and are among the UK’s best-selling range of small, compact machine tools.

‘The introduction of new models considerably strengthens our turning portfolio, and will reinforce the Lynx’s position as the UK’s number one range of high-productivity, high flexibility, cost-competitive compact lathes.’

Puma lathes

At MACH 2010, a new series of Puma lathes was launched by Mills. In less than 2 years these machines have become the UK and Ireland’s best-selling lathes in the 8” to 12” chuck size market. It is little surprise therefore why they feature so prominently on Mills’ stand at this year’s MACH show.

The new Puma series comprises three different sizes of lathe - (8” chuck/65mm bar diameter; 10” chuck/76mm bar diameter; 12” chuck/102mm bar diameter) which, with different bed lengths and different technical specifications i.e. C-axis; sub-spindles; Y-axis, driven tools etc., means that, in total, there are 36 models in the new Puma range. All machines have a box guideway construction and a modular design concept.

Says Andrew Jack, Technical Director at MACH:

‘These new Puma lathes have proved to be incredibly popular since they were first introduced. They are exceptional performers and provide manufacturers with improved accuracy and cutting performance and greater process reliability.’

The Puma lathes in this series that are being exhibited at MACH are as follows:

Puma 2100SY:

The Puma 2100SY has an 8” chuck/65mm bar work diameter; a 5,000rpm 22kW/358NM built-in main spindle and 6,000rpm 15kW/134NM built in sub-spindle. The machine also features a C-axis, Live Tooling and a Y-axis.

Puma 2600Y:

The Puma 2600Y has a 10” chuck/76mm bar work diameter; a 4000rpm built in spindle (22kW/625Nm); C-axis and Live Tooling and a 102mm Y-axis.

Puma 3100LY:

The Puma 3100LY is a powerful lathe and has a 12” chuck/102mm bar working diameter. The machine also features a high-torque 3,000rpm built in spindle (30kW/1203Nm), a 12 station milling turret, C axis , live tooling and a 130mm Y-axis.

Big Puma lathes

Doosan large-capacity lathes (and machine tools in general) have quite a following in the oil/gas, power generation, aerospace sectors. This, plus Mills taking out its largest ever stand at this year’s Show allows pride of place to two, massively-popular, Puma lathes.

Puma 480: New at MACH

The Puma 480 is a large, incredibly powerful and versatile machine ideal for every machining application. The Puma 480 machine has a 21" chuck/165.5mm bar capacity, a 45kW (gearbox-driven) 1,500 rpm spindle, and a 10-station turret.

Puma 700LY: New at MACH

The Puma 700LY is one of the biggest lathes Mills has ever taken to MACH.

The machine with its chuck size up to 32" and bar capacity of 164mm, is designed to handle large and heavy work pieces, and is used extensively in the oil/gas, power generation, and large automotive sectors.

To accommodate large and long components the Puma 700LY has a bed length of 3,000mm – and its cutting performance is driven by a 45kw 1,500rpm spindle. Improved flexibility and productivity are assured via its Driven Tools and Y-axis (200mm) capabilities.

Multi-Axis turning centres

MX 2600ST: Multi-axis Mill – Turn Centre

The integration of a machining centre with a turning centre provides unmatched flexibility and productivity, enabling manufacturers to machine parts from start to finish with just one machines

Doosan MX-series mill-turn machines can undertake simple turning and milling operations right through to more complex, multi-axis simultaneous machining. The MX machines' Y-axis and integrated B-axis increases the range of milling operations that the machines can handle.

The MX 2600ST machine being showcased at MACH has a 12"chuck/76mm bar capacity and 2 x 26kW 4,000rpm spindles, as well as an integrated (240 degree) B-axis and a 230 mm Y-axis (+/-115mm), and a lower 12 -station turret. The MX2600ST has a tool change capacity of 40 or 80 tools for the B axis spindle.

TT 1800SY: Twin Turret – Twin Spindle Turning Centre

The compact TT 1800SY 8-axis machine, with integrated Y-axis capability (+/- 50mm), has been designed to take customers’ productivity to new dimensions.

The TT machine being showcased has a 65mm bar working diameter; 22kW 5,000rpm spindles (left and right) and 40m/min rapids.

The TT 1800SY provides the optimum machining solution for high volume manufacture of small-to-medium size, complex parts and completes the Mills:Doosan line-up of multi-tasking mill-turn and turning centres being exhibited at the Show.
