Mills launches new Doosan Puma and Lynx lathe series' at MACH!
Date: 22 April 2010
Focus: lathes and turning centres
Mills CNC, the exclusive distributor of Doosan machine tools in the UK and Ireland has confirmed that, amongst the 13 machines it will be exhibiting at MACH, will be models from its new ranges of Puma and Lynx lathes.
The 3 new Puma lathes being showcased on Mills' Stand (Hall 5 stand 5430) are the Puma 2100SY; the Puma 2600M and the Puma 3100XLY, and the new Lynx is a Lynx 300M lathe.
All four machines are making their UK debuts at MACH, and there is eager anticipation surrounding their appearance both inside Mills and in the wider precision manufacturing community as a whole.
The new Puma range
The new Puma series comprises three different sizes of lathe - (8" chuck/65mm bar diameter; 10" chuck/76mm bar diameter; 12" chuck/102mm bar diameter) which, with different bed lengths and different technical specifications i.e. C-axis; sub-spindles; Y-axis, driven tools etc., means that, in total, there are 36 models in the new Puma range.
Says Andrew Jack, Technical Director at MACH:
'Doosan Puma lathes are both popular and successful, and the advent of the new series' will strengthen our already dominant position in the 8" - 12" chuck market. As one would expect from a Doosan - the machines provide manufacturers with high-performance, improved accuracy and process reliability, and are competitively priced.'
The new Pumas are designed to go head-to-head against leading Japanese lathes and, all indications suggest that they will give them more than a 'run for their money'.
The new range has been designed and produced following extensive market research by Doosan into the stringent demands of today's manufacturing industries and market sectors.
Using the latest and most advanced 3D CAD (product design) facilities - the new Puma machines are based on a 'modular' design/framework using common machine and CNC elements. A wide variety of additional technical options (i.e. belt-driven or built-in motor spindles/sub-spindles, tow-along or servo-driven tailstocks; Y-axis etc.), ensures that the new Pumas can be tailored to meet every manufacturer's needs and requirements.
The new Pumas provide customers with improved accuracy and repeatability figures. This has been achieved by increasing the machines' rigidity and stability, and by reducing the thermal effects caused during machining.
Rigidity and stability:
The new Pumas benefit from:
- A larger base casting footprint
- Enlarged Headstock mounting area (90% increase)
- Reduced spindle length to minimise vibration
- 40% increase in slide-way contact area
- 50% increase in sub-spindle mounting area and heavier duty sub spindle
Minimising thermal effects:
- Heat sources are isolated from the machine's base and spindle by heat shields and fans
- Oil/air lubrication reduces heat build-up in the driven tooling drive mechanism
Says Andrew Jack:
'The improved build and design means that the new Pumas deliver outstanding and reliable accuracy, even when the machines are in constant use over a long period of time.'
The new Pumas being exhibited at MACH are as follows:
Puma 2100SY:
The Puma 2100SY has an 8" chuck/65mm bar work diameter; a 5,000rpm 22kW/358NM built-in main spindle and 6,000rpm 15kW/134NM sub-spindle; C-axis, Live Tooling and Y-axis.
Puma 2600M:
The Puma 2600M has a 10" chuck/76mm bar work diameter; 3,500rpm belt-driven spindle (22kW/625Nm); C-axis and Live Tooling.
Puma 3100XLY:
A powerful lathe equipped with 12" chuck/102mm bar working diameter. The machine also features a high-torque 3,000rpm built in spindle (30kW/1203Nm), a 12 station milling turret and a 130mm Y axis.
The new Lynx 300M
Although the new Puma lathes may steal the show - the new Doosan Lynx 300M is also bound to generate significant interest at MACH.
The new Lynx 300 series is an extension to the highly successful range of 2- and 3-axis value driven Lynx lathes. Unlike existing Lynx lathes - the new 300 series machines have a 10" chuck/76mm bar work diameter, and have full C-axis and Live Tooling capability.
The new Lynx 300M lathe is a general purpose machine that provides customers with outstanding performance at a more than competitive price.
Concludes Andrew Jack:
'The new Puma machines (and the new Lynx) demonstrate Doosan revolutionary technology at its best.
'With 4 brand new lathes being exhibited on our Stand at MACH - we're expecting to be rushed off our feet during the Show.'
